Pin curls, glamorous 30's 40's 50's hairstyles?

For my prom i'm having an 40's/50's style dress and i'm wearing Mary Jane shoes.

My hairs just about touching my shoulders and i'd love to try an old-fashioned pin curl hairstyle. I know it can't be done with conventional curling tongs, so how do you do it? I also have a side fringe, but i can pin that back if it won't blend into the hairstyle.

I'm very fair-skinned and have medium brown chestnut hair.

I'm thinking Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman, Greta Garbo hair. I want something different, all the other girls are going down the fake tan, extentions route lol.

Help please anybody? Thanks :)

PS. I'd rather do it myself than go to a hairdressers.

I love styles from that era. You can get pin curls by putting gel in your hair while its still wet, then twist small sections. Curl each of these sections like an "o" to your scalp and clip it in place w/ bobby pins or little clips. When your hair is totally dry, take them out and gently run your fingers thru the curls. It will look awesome.

Pin curls are pretty easy. Takes a little time, and is painful to sleep on, but definately can do it your self!

Wash your hair, divide in sections, twist pieces around your fingers in spirals, and pin it close to your head with two bobby pins criss-crossed, and either sleep on it that way overnight or do it early and wear it that way all day. You may want to try it a few times first to makes sure it turns out the way you want it. :-)

spray your hair with working hairspray (not finishing hairspray) and brush thru it.

take a 2 inch section and at the scalp area use the curling iron going down and pull the ends in one direction and the iron in the opposite direction. hold for a few seconds to make sure it gets HOT.

take the iron out of the hair.

turn it over so it's going up.

under the 'bump' you just did, hold the iron up and pull the ends in the opposite direction you did on the 'down' and pull the iron in the opposite direction. hold for a few seconds to make sure it gets HOT.

take out the iron.

turn it back 'down'.

go to under the 'bump' you just did and do the first again.

go all the way down.

do the whole head.

you will need help, but not necessarily a stylist.

it ends up looking like fingerwaves. once you get the hang of it , it's super easy.

for pincurls, honestly, go to your local old people home and ask an old lady there to show you how. she'll be more than happy to teach you; she'll feel useful, give her a sense of purpose; and you'll learn A LOT. and they will be able to give you tips and hints that stylists won't be able to because they have the pincurl thing DOWNPAT.lol.
